Securing an MSN or Username Address Most people choose pseudonymous usernames in place of their real name online. If you sign up for many forums or IM systems, you may have one or more usernames. In place of a username, Windows Live, Google, Yahoo and AOL require an email address. If you use your email address frequently as a username, you increase the risks of unsolicited or spam email, as well as hacking. If you take precaution against phishing and spyware, this tutorial will show you safety measures to secure username address. This tutorial secures an MSN (a.k.a. Windows Live Passport ID) as an example. I have not tested it on other sites, but you should be able use it for a Google Account ID, a Yahoo! ID, an AOL My eAddress ID and others. Tutorial Outline Use psedonymous information to register an MSN. Set up an MSN as an email forwarder* to keep your actual email safe. Keep secret your IP address** and your actual email inbox. If your MSN is frozen, contact MSN with your pseudonymous information to unfreeze the account. Alternatively, you can discard the frozen MSN as it is an email forwarder and not your actual email. *Inspired by Notorious Mental's tutorial here. **Xch4ng3 gave me this tip in a post below. Username Addresses Select a pseudonymous username address with which to communicate. A pseudonymous name is an online handle. Select a username address. Here are addresses I selected with disposable, personalised or 5G+ storage features. Disposable (Click to View) Personalised (Click to View) 5G+ Storage (Click to View) Anonymous Registration Secure and verify your username address, without any first name or last name, using Notorious Mental's tutorial here: (Click) Pseudonymous Registration Secure and verify your username address as an MSN (Passport) here: (Click) Do not use real information to register your MSN. Create pseudonymous details here: (Click) Your MSN will be secure from reverting because the username address is from a third-party provider, which Microsoft has no right to revert. The pseudonymous information provided is known only to you. MSN Forwarding Depending on your email requirements, register a new email from the addresses provided above. This will be your actual email inbox. Change the options of your MSN to receive email at your actual inbox address. If your MSN address falls into the hands of spammers, or if you receive unsolicited mail, you need not switch your MSN. You need only switch your inbox address for forwarded mail. Your MSN now functions as an email forwarder or email alias, and your inbox is also secure from reverting. Please post if you found this useful. :) Thanks to Sam Fisher for commenting on a first draft. Thanks to Notorious Mental for writing MSN tutorials! |
